Dallas’ 7th Gift to the World.

In the spirit of the abundant holiday gift giving that will be taking place over the next couple of months, all the Metroblogging cities are giving 7 gifts to the world throughout the week of NOV 26th – DEC 2. This is Dallas’ 7th Gift to the World.

This one is obvious. With a 1980’s TV show as big as the state’s ego, Dallas’ 7th gift has to be Dallas. The unforgetable (ok that’s a debatable adjective) saga of the Ewing Family, began as a five part mini-series in 1978. Throughout it’s thirteen seasons, many actors passed through the gates of Southfork…but only one would become the answer to the now infamous question “Who shot J.R.?”

I still remember that theme song.

I had my rehearsal dinner at Southfork long ago planned and paid by the to-be-in-laws who got more of a kick out of it than us “young’ins”. For those die hard Dallas show buffs, the Southfork ranch is worth the visit.

On a global scale, as a four-year-old, I knew of Dallas from my mom watching the show in Romania.

I have no idea if the show was on Romanian tv or if she had some sort of pirated tv to illegally watch shows from the West; but it was popular behind the Iron Curtain. This gift meant a lot to ordinary people in at least one communist country.

(I didn’t get it. I preferred cartoons when I was four.)

When I was little, if I was really good, my parents would let me stay up just late enough to listen to the Dallas theme song and then I’d have to go to bed.
