The idea behind Rock Lottery 7 is twenty-five North Texas musicians collaborating on a impromptu performance. 25 musicians across all generes of music are picked to partcipate. The 25 names go into a hat, then randomly drawn to form their new band for the evening. Each randomly paired band is then given 12 hours to rehearse and be ready to preform their results for us all. The musicians this year include band members from The Polyphonic Spree, Baptist Generals, Bosque Brown, Mandarin and The pAperchAse.

local airline stuff

This week has been slow for blogging content. At least for me, too many personal things going on that either I can’t blog about or they are just not that interesting. In the mean time, I am planning a trip to see a friend in Missouri - Dixon, Missouri… where long, permed hair is still all the rage. The final leg of my journey will be on one of those little puddle jumper planes, and I have never flown on one of those before. I emailed a pilot friend about it and he replied that the plane was a safe one, but not really that nice.

Speaking of flying out of Dallas, how funny it is that American Airlines has to pay for a study that says that if the Wright Amendment is lifted it will be a bad thing for DFW. How can it be bad for Dallas/Ft. Worth if it has served its purpose, which was to allow DFW to grow and become the major international airport that it is? This has been done, and the time has come to do away with the Wright Amendment and allow Southwest Airlines to give AA some real competition. I would have liked to have chosen another carrier this time but that wasn’t an option. I am hoping that by the next time I fly some where I will have a better selection of airlines, and fares, to choose from.

Songbirds They Ain’t

One of the things I’ve noticed on this visit is how bad the bird problem has become downtown. Show up in Sundance Square around dawn or dusk, and you’ll see the grackles flying in from all over the place, squawking up a storm and crapping all over the place. Well, the good news is, there’s a plan coming together (bugmenot)involving local residents, guns and pyrotechnics permits.

Apparently, folks are going to get proper training in the use of starters’ pistols and cracker shells in order to chase off the grackles from downtown.

Am I the only one who thinks we ought to employ the pied piper of Hamlin instead?

Visiting Town

Hi everyone, just wanted to introduce myself, my name’s Tom Bridge and usually I blog over at the DC Metroblog, but I’m guest-blogging here for a week while I’m visiting the Dallas/Fort Worth area for work. I’m staying down at Etta’s Place on Sundance Square, so if you want to join me for a beer over at the Flying Saucer, drop me a line in the comments!

shopping bargains

I took the day off today and went shopping with my sister at Name Brand Clothing in North Richland Hills. All I have to say is twelve items for under $60. Today was their .99 cent sale, and I found out that you can get a ton of name brand basic items for next to nothing. They have other things there that are a bit more and I got a few of those, but mostly a bunch a nice t-shirts. One thing - if you go there and buy things look them over VERY CAREFULLY because these things aren’t cheap for no reason. Many have stains, and you have to be the judge as to whether or not they will come out with washing. Other things have holes and flaws. For these, you have to decide if you can fix them, and if they are worth fixing. Some things there have nothing obviously wrong with them, or nothing that is going to make a huge difference in the garment’s wear. Simply put, go there, shop carefully and get you some bargains!

dating boredom 2

My online dating membership has a few months left on it but I am thinking of a revision for this last bit of time - adding a statement on my profile about how I am not fond of the internet dating thing, that I am bored to tears with it, and also how email should be used as more of a utility rather than a means of divulging personal details and life histories (enough of the personal stuff should already be in the profile).

After this explanation, tell the reader that if they are interested they should email me their phone number along with any have-to-know-before-a-date questions that they would like for me to answer, and how it would be good if these questions were ones that were smart, inquistive and/or funny. If I am interested, I will reply and/or call (eventually). If not, then I won’t call. Then a line about not distributing numbers, and how if they get calls from telemarketers it won’t be because of me, and also how I am non-stalking and that if I do actually call them they might want to look outside to check for flying pigs. Also a line about how I am not Russian and the only “mail order” things I do usually involve Amazon.

I just want to cut out some of the drivel. There are so many people on there that are not my type, and those are the ones I get emails from. Once in a while I will get one that is interesting, but after the first response, there is just the emailing back and forth and that gets lame really quick.

I haven’t gone through with this though, but I am considering it. If it will make this online thing a smidge less boring it could be worth it.

Texas-OU and I-35

In case you didn’t know, Texas-OU weekend is this coming weekend. The mass exodus from Oklahoma will probably begin Thursday. For those of you that drive I-35 on a daily basis, this might be a good time to find an alternate route. If you have no alternate route, then I’m sorry. You will be drving with the Okie’s all weekend and speaking from experience, it is not fun.

Coming out of Denton there are back roads you can take that will get you to Lewisville, but I am not sure about alternates from there as I was always hopping back on I-35 after that. I am sure it will be bad all day Friday. Just thought I would post this little heads up in case anyone forgot or just didn’t know - better to find out now so that if you have to drive that way you will at least know who to curse at while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
